Are Robocar Teams Doing “Safety Theater” Or Acceptable Risk?:

A discussion re the essay by Robbie Miller posted April 17 which calls out several in the robocar industry for “safety theater.” As a note, Miller quit Uber a few days before their fatality after sending a letter to its management about the bad safety practices there.  Counting disengagements, he claims, is not useful as everybody reports them differently and he calls this “safety theater”

One interesting point is the odd ratio of AV accidents which were ‘the other driver at fault’ . Maybe the reason is explained by the fact that large numbers of accidents are unreported and don’t show up in databases, while every tiny accident for robocars in California is reported.
