Sony to Roll Out 8MP Automotive CMOS Sensor only in 2020 (1) | NIKKEI XTECH

Sony started to ship samples of the sensor in 2017 and planned to start volume production in June 2018. Specification changes, additional functions and market trends caused a slip in schedules to 2020.

Sony expects that the IMX324 will be combined with the “EyeQ5” next-generation chip, which Mobileye will start to mass-produce in 2021.

On Semiconductor Corp is planning to start volume production of its 8MP sensor in the early 2020s.

With an 8MP sensor and 30 degree lens is possible to read traffic signs located about 160m away and vehicles 500m away. With existing products having a pixel count of about two million, it is not possible to read the speed limit of a traffic sign located 100m or farther away.

Or, alternatively, with a 120 deg lens it becomes possible to detect vehicles and white lines located 137m away.
